Lift Kit Basics

When it comes to our vehicles, some gearheads can’t wait for an opportunity to modify their look and feel. From new rims to specialty and off-road tires to other, more unique specifications, any excuse to improve the look and performance of your vehicle is a good one. A common practice we see on the road is the usage of lift kits to make a car or truck sit higher off the ground than it normally would. Some of us have seen these and questioned the decision, while other vehicles look better the more defined their lift and tires are. Here at HH Rims, we believe that modifying your vehicle can mean much more than buying rims and wheels that look a little different than your originals. Today, we’ll take a quick look at what exactly a lift kit is, what it does for your vehicle, and why you may want to consider adding such a modification to yours. Here at HH Rims, we offer a wide variety of rims, wheels, tires, and lift kits, so shop with us for all of your vehicle modification and accessory needs!

What are Lift Kits?

In the simplest terms, lift kits are simply modifications that make your vehicle taller. They can be used on cars, trucks, SUVs, or some other vehicle you have in mind. They are often used only on four-wheeled vehicles, as you are more likely to see a lowering kit utilized on motorcycles and two-wheeled transportation options. From cars to trucks, you’ll see a variety of lift kits used for different reasons, but they are far more common than you may initially think.

When it comes to lift kits, there is more to them than meets the eye. There are distinct options that will create different outcomes, but for our purposes, there are two main options when it comes to choosing a lift kit. These are:

  • Body: this type of lift kit is a more subtle version. It includes using a nylon spacer and placing it between the frame and body of your vehicle, thus raising it a few inches. This does not have any effect on your vehicle’s suspension.
  • Suspension: a suspension lift kit is the opposite of the body lift kit. Rather than a subtle lift of several inches, suspension lift kits are used to take the vehicle as high as it can go. Not only does this give your car or truck a significant change in height, it also gives anyone who opts for this the ability to buy new tires and rims. Essentially, a suspension lift kit gives you the opportunity to give your vehicle the makeover you’ve always wanted.

When Would You Need to Lift Your Car?

There are always reasons for a person to modify their vehicle. Like a fingerprint or a piece of art, each vehicle is meant to represent the person who owns it in a unique way. Some of the reasons for lifting a car include:

  • Line of Sight: Sometimes, people simply feel more comfortable when they have a high vantage point. Lifting a vehicle means that you will be able to see over most traffic, if not all of it, in a lifted pick-up truck.
  • Off-Roading/Mudding: If you are a fan of riding down unpaved country roads, up hills or mountain paths riddled with boulders and rocks, or slogging through swampy, muddy territory, then lifting your vehicle might be in your best interest. Truck mud tires and other specialty tires are almost a necessity, but the extra space between the ground and the bottom of your vehicle’s chassis can prevent you from getting stuck in a less than ideal situation.
  • Aesthetics: Sometimes, the bigger and more robust a vehicle is, the better it looks. If you’ve put a great deal of work into your car, then you probably want to show it off. Nothing will do the trick more than elevating your car and having it tower above the rest of the crowd. our car will stand out in a parking lot or on the highway, and a lift kit combined with the right tires will help create the look you want.
